The subject consists of a number of topics that relate essentially to the division of the Christian Church during the Eleventh Century between the Byzantine Church (the Patriarchate of Constantinople) and the Catholic Church (the Patriarchate of Rome). This is followed by the great schism of the sixteenth century, which led to the rise of Protestantism and the Church of England. The subject also covers the modern revival of the Coptic Church, which began in the Nineteenth Century.
